Biography

Sergey Mylnikov began his hockey career with Traktor Chelyabinsk in 1976 and played there until 1989, except for a short spell with SKA Leningrad in 1980-82. With Traktor Chelyabinsk Mylnikov won his only medal at the Soviet Championships, a bronze, in 1977. In 1989 he was drafted by the Quebec Nordiques as the 127th overall choice, and although he played only one season, 1989/90, he was the first Soviet goaltender to play in the NHL. From 1991-93 Mylnikov played with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl and finished his playing career in Sweden, with Säters IF from 1993-95.

Internationally Mylnikov was the top Soviet goaltender for nearly four seasons, from 1986-90. He won Olympic gold in 1988, was a three-time World Champion (1986, 1989, 1990), and a four-time European Champion (1985-87, 1989). He also won silvers at the 1987 World Championships, 1990 European Championships, 1987 Canada Cup, and a bronze at the 1985 World Championships.

After finishing his playing career, Mylnikov worked as a hockey coach. He served as head coach of Säters IF from 1995-97, coach of Lada Tolyatti from 1997-98, head coach of the Krylya Sovetov Moskva junior team from 1998-99 and 2001-2003, coach of Severstal Cherepovets from 1999-2001, coach of Vityaz Chekhov from 2004-2006, coach of Krylya Sovetov Moskva 2007-2008 and coach of Avtomobilist Yekaterinbug in 2011. His sons Dmitry and Sergey also became international level ice hockey goalies.
