Neville Melland was one of the few English-born players who played for the British ice hockey team at the 1928 Winter Olympics. He also represented Great Britain in three World Championships in 1930, 1931 and 1934, never placing better than eighth, and the European Championships in 1926. Melland attended Winchester College from 1917-22. He then went to Trinity College, Oxford, where he played lacrosse and in 1925 was elected president and captain of the Oxford University Lacrosse Club.
After University Melland played for Hampstead and the London Lions. He won representative honors at lacrosse for Middlesex, the South, and was captain of the England team in 1932. He was also a lacrosse referee of note. He learned ice hockey at Manchester and later improved his game at Oxford, where he captained the team He also played ice hockey for the London Lions before he moved to the Richmond Hawks for the 1934-35 season in the British National League.
The nephew of British Prime Minister (1908-1916) Herbert Asquith, Melland was also a fine tennis player. He reached the semi-final of the menâs doubles at the Northern Tournament at Manchester in 1940. Melland got his all-round sporting ability from his father Norman who was also an international lacrosse player, a Lancashire county hockey and tennis player, and a proficient ice skater.
