Biography

Ed Mendoza ran distances for the University of Arizona and Tiger International. He competed in the 1976 Olympic 10K and the 1983 World Championships marathon. Mendoza was AAU 25 km. champion in 1974. Although he made the US Olympic team as a track runner, Mendoza was known more for his exploits in cross-country and on the roads, although he also won the Drake Relays 10K in 1976.

Mendoza won the Aztec Invitational cross-country meet in San Diego in 1973-75. In addition to multiple shorter road victories at 5 and 10K, Mendoza won several marathons: 1975 Fiesta Bowl (Scottsdale) and San Diego, 1976 Fiesta Bowl (Scottsdale), 1978 and 1980 San Diego, 1981 Tucson, and 1982 Phoenix. Mendoza’s best finish at Boston was fourth in 1983. He later became a high school teacher and coach in Phoenix, Arizona.

Personal Bests: 1,500 – 3:52.4 (1976); Mile – 4:03.1 (1974); 2 miles – 8:33.2i (1975); 5K – 13:56.8 (1974); 10K – 28:23.2 (1976); Marathon – 2-10:07 (1983).
