Chip McKibben rowed in college initially at Orange Coast College but later moved to U Cal Berkeley. He was on the US national team from 1989-95, rowing in four World Championships, the 1995 Pan American Games, and the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. McKibben won gold medals in the USA eight at the 1994 Worlds, and the 1995 Pan Ams. He started as a sculler, rowing double sculls at the 1991 Worlds, and quad sculls at the 1992 Olympics and 1993 Worlds, but later switched to sweep rowing.
McKibben stayed involved in sports as a career, but not in rowing. He became the general manager of Blenheim Farms in San Juan Capistrano, California, an equestrian center that hosted the 2000 US Olympic equestrian trials. McKibben has also worked in mortgage banking for RJ Brandis, but purchased Blenheim Farms in 1998. He has also served on the board of directors at the Newport Aquatic Center. He continued to seek out competition, in lifeguard events.
