Biography

Pat Lovell attended Cal Poly San Luis Opisbo, where he played football for three years and wrestled for all four years. He won the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate heavyweight title from 1958-60. Lovell had 13 podium finishes in various national freestyle and Greco-Roman championships. Lovell later became known in the wrestling world both as a coach and an official. He started coaching at James Lick High School in San Jose, where he coached, among others, Jim Plunkett, later a quarterback star in the NFL. He then moved to Monta Vista High School and then Cabrillo Community College, where he coached both wrestling and football. He officiated wrestling meets and tournaments for over 40 years, including officiating at 17 NCAA and 17 US National Championships. He was inducted into the US Wrestling Hall of Fame as an official.
