Biography

Elżbieta Krzesińska competed in the long jump at the 1952, 1956 and 1960 Olympics, in 1952 under her maiden name of Elżbieta Duńska. Krzesińska won the gold medal in 1956 and added a silver in 1960. She was a bronze medalist in the long jump at the 1954 European Championships, adding a silver in that event in 1962. She was the gold medalist at the 1954 World Student Games in the long jump and pentathlon, and won the long jump at the 1959 Universiade in Torino.

Krzesińska set a world record of 6.35 in winning an international in Budapest in August 1956, and then equaled that mark a few months later to win the gold medal in Melbourne. She was world ranked #1 in 1956, and #2 in 1957, 1960, and 1962. Krzesińska won 10 Polish Championships, winning the long jump in 1952-54, 1957, 1959, and 1962-63, the 80 metre hurdles in 1957, and the pentathlon in 1953 and 1962. She later competed in Masters competition, breaking age group world records in the long jump, triple jump, and high hurdles in 1988. Krzesińska lived in the United States from 1981-2000, working as an athletics coach, before returning to her native Poland.
