Edward Bernard Koster was born in London but grew up in the Netherlands. He studied classical languages in Leiden and graduated with the Studia tragico-homerica. In 1897 Koster became a teacher in Den Haag. Although he wrote mainly nature poetry, his epic works were better known. Koster also wrote studies on William Shakespeare and translated many of his works.
