Alan Kingsbery lettered for three years (1972-74) in cross-country at Carthage College. He competed in the road race at the 1975 Pan American Games and the team time trial at the 1976 Olympics. At the US Championships, Kingsbery was 8th in the road race in 1976, after finishing 13th in 1974 and 1975. He had been a cross-country runner in high school, and he had a short elite cycling career, not by choice. At the 1978 US Time Trial Championship, Kingsbery was hit by a cement truck, sustaining major life-threatening injuries. He recovered but was left with permanent damage to his right foot and leg. He eventually returned to cycling in the late 1980s, competing in cycling events for the disabled. Kingsbery was inducted into the Carthage (Ohio) High School Hall of Fame in 1991.
