Better known as a 200 m runner prior to the Olympics, Pam Jiles was a surprise choice for the 4x400 m relay, but a 51.3 leg in the final fully justified her selection. She ran for Dillard University, the New Orleans Super Dames, and later for [LSU]. She never won an AAU title, but was the 100 m champion at the 1975 Pan American Games where she also finished second in the 200 m and was on the winning 4x100 metres relay team. Jiles was world ranked #6 in the 100 and #4 in the 200 in 1975.
