Biography

Edna Hughes won a bronze medal in the 4x100 freestyle relay at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. She competed at the British Empire Games in both 1934 and 1938, winning a silver in the 3x110 yard medley relay in 1934 and a bronze that year in the 4x110 yard freestyle relay. In 1938 she added another bronze medal in the 4x100 free relay. She also competed in the 110 yard freestyle in both 1934 and 1938, finishing fifth in 1934. She competed for England at the British Empire Games. Hughes also won bronze in the 4x100 metre free relay at the 1934 European Championships.

Hughes turned professional in March 1939 when she was appointed coach and instructress to the women’s section at the Walsall Swimming Club. In May that same year she secretly married Walsall FC footballer Douglas Redwood, a former Welsh youth international.
