Fourth place at the US Olympic Trials earned Art Harnden of Texas A&M a place on the 1948 Olympic relay team. He ran a 48.0 opening leg in the final, which put the U.S. into a lead they held to the tape. Harnden had a career best of 47.3 (47.47) for 400 m in placing third in the 1948 NCAA.
Harnden joined the US Army Air Force in World War II and was stationed with the 8th Air Force in England, flying 23 missions over Germany. After the war he went to Texas A&M, and then worked for Texaco for over 40 years, and then retired, only to then work another 21 years with Walmart. Harnden was inducted into the Texas A&M Hall of Fame in 1966.
