In 1927, John Gibson won the AAU 440y hurdles in a world record time of 52.6. He placed on the podium in the AAU 400 hurdles five years consecutively – 1924-28 – with seconds in 1925-26 and thirds in 1924 and 1928. He was ranked in the US top 25 lists in the 400 hurdles every year from 1924-28 and 1930.

Gibson graduated from Fordham University and competed for the Bloomfield Catholic Lyceum. He later became a track coach at Seton Hall University and a popular official at meets on the East Coast. Gibson is a member of multiple Halls of Fame, including those for Fordham University, Seton Hall University, Helms Hall, the New Jersey Sports Authority, and Garden State.
