Biography

Paul Friedberg fenced at the University of Pennsylvania, helping them win the team title at the 1981 NCAA Championships. He graduated with degrees from the College of Engineering and Applied Science and later earned an MBA from Penn’s Wharton School of Business. As a senior in 1981, Friedberg received the Class of 1915 Award, given to a senior class athlete “who most closely approaches the ideal University of Pennsylvania student-athlete.” Friedberg was a four-time All-Ivy League selection, and a three-time All-American at Penn. He was NCAA sabre champion in 1979, 1980 and 1981, and competed at the 1983 Pan American Games and 1988 Seoul Olympics. After college he represented the New York Athletic Club, as did his brother, [John], who competed at the 1992 Olympics in fencing.

Friedberg later achieved some televised fame when his home in Newton, Massachusetts was chosen as a renovation project for the popular US public television show “This Old House.” Part of season 29 was devoted to a renovation of the house.
