The brother of Northern Ireland full international Tommy Forde, Hugh made his name with three of the country’s top teams, Ards, Glenavon and Distillery and enjoyed his greatest success with Glenavon, winning the Irish Cup and Ulster Cup in 1959 and the Irish League in 1960 – the third and last time they won the title. He was captain of the Northern Ireland amateur international side, for whom he won three caps between 1957-60 and he also represented the Irish League on three occasions. An attacking wing-half, he was a member of the 1960 Olympic squad but played only in the third and final game against Chinese Taipei (then Taiwan). Like his brother Tommy, Hugh also emigrated to Australia and settled in South Australia.
