At the 1953 Maccabiah Games, Engel won the hammer throw gold medal, adding a silver in the discus.

In the early 1960s Engel injured his ankle badly and taught himself to rotate clockwise, rather than counter-clockwise, and still threw over 52 metres. Engel later settled in Centreport, New York and became a well-known private throwing coach.
