Alex De Jesús competed as a lightweight boxer for Puerto Rico at the 2004 Olympics, losing in the second round. He had been a silver medalist at the 2002 Central America and Caribbean Games and competed at the 2003 Pan American Games. De Jesús turned professional after the 2004 Athina Games and showed promise, winning his first 19 bouts as a pro, before losing by unanimous decision to César René Cuenca (ARG) in 2009.
De Jesús had a troubled life, and after that bout, served a four-year prison sentence for domestic abuse. In December 2013, after his release, he resumed his professional career. He had two further bouts, losing his final effort in January 2015 in Florida against Joseph Elegele, finishing with a career professional record of 21 wins (13 by KO) and 2 defeats. De Jesús claimed seven minor titles â WBO Latino lightweight title, WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation lightweight crown, WBA Fedecaribe lightweight title, WBO Latino light-welterweight title, WBA Fedecaribe welterweight championship, WBC Latino light-welterweight crown, and the WBA Fedebol light-welterweight title.
In April 2016, De Jesús faced further difficulties with the law when he was charged with attacking his stepmother. A warrant was issued for his arrest, but a few days later, De Jesús was killed early in the morning when he was walking home and was shot 12 times. There were suspicions that it was done by someone taking the law into his own hands, after hearing about the attack on De Jesúsâs stepmother.
