Biography

Gösta Carell was a Swedish medalist and sculptor. He attended the Technical School in Malmö, and worked in a studio for facade decorations. He studied in København (Copenhagen) under Vilhelm Bissen (1836-1913), and in New York, at the Cooper Union School of Fine Arts. There, he also worked for medal engraver Victor David Brenner. Back in Sweden, he lived in Malmö and Stockholm. Carell used a variety of techniques and materials. He was a member of the Artists’ National Organization and the Swedish Artists’ Association. Amongst others, he produced a medal of King Gustaf III on the occasion of his 80th birthday, and exhibited it in the Exchange Hall, Stockholm. Samples of almost all of the medals he produced are treasured in the Royal Coin Cabinet.
