Biography

Forbes Carlile competed at the 1952 Olympics in the modern pentathlon but he was really known for his swimming ability and later as a swim coach. He eventually coached 52 Australian swimmers to the elite international level, who combined for 12 Olympics gold medals and set 31 individual world records. Most notably, Carlile coached [Shane Gould], who starred at the 1972 Olympics and once held every world freestyle record between 100 and 1,500 metres. At his death, Carlile was the oldest living Australian Olympian.
