Biography

Pietro Borsari was a Swiss sculptor and graphic artist who mostly produced busts, figures, reliefs, medals, and funerary monuments in soft natural forms. His preferred motifs were religious themes and mostly worked in marble and bronze. One of his best known works is the bronze fountain figure of San Francesco in Lugano. In addition, he produced large-scale woodcuts in simplified forms. Borsari started as a sculptor apprentice under Luigi Vassalli and Giuseppe Chiattone in Lugano. Later he studied at the Scuola professionale di Disegno in Medrisio and from 1909-14 at the Scuola di Plastica in Lugano. There he opened his own studio in 1920. His brother Constante Borsari was also an artist.
