Biography

Gayle “Chato” Bluth was one of the legends of Mexican basketball. Born in Colonia Juárez, he came from a Mormon (LDS) family and did Mormon missions in the United States as a youth. The highlights of his career were leading Mexico to a gold medal at the 1954 Central American and Caribbean Games, and a silver medal at the 1959 Pan American Games in Chicago. Bluth retired from competition after the 1964 season and devoted himself to his church and his farm. He and his wife served several LDS missions, in Buenos Aires from 1986-88, Bahía Blanca, Argentina from 1989-92, and Monterrey, Mexico from 2001-02.
