Desmond Armstrong played college soccer (football) at the University of Maryland, where he was first-team All-ACC in 1984 and 1985. In 1986 he helped the Fairfax Spartans win the National Amateur Cup. Armstrong turned professional, playing three seasons in the Major Indoor Soccer League, one in the Brazilian First Division, two in the American Professional Soccer League, and two in the US Indoor Soccer League. He played for various clubs, including the Cleveland Force, Baltimore Blast, Santos (Brazil), Maryland Bays, Charlotte Eagles, and the Washington Warthogs. Internationally Armstrong played for the US National team from 1987-94, earning 81 caps.

After his playing career ended Armstrong became active in Christian ministry and in coaching youth soccer near his home in Charlotte, NC. He coached Montreat College from 1999-2006, but later moved to Ohio where he was named manager of Rocket City United in 2009. Armstrong also did some work on television as a soccer analyst. Armstrong later became President of Pantheon Sports Ventures, LLC a sports marketing, management company that focuses on guiding players through their careers. He was inducted into the Maryland Soccer Hall of Fame in 2007 and the US Soccer Hall of Fame in 2012.
