Biography

Beth Anders had a long career in international hockey. She played hockey (field) and lacrosse at Ursinus College, graduating in 1973, and played for the US women’s national team from 1969-84. She also played squash in college, winning the 1970 intercollegiate women’s squash title. Anders earned over 100 caps for the US and scored over 100 goals in international play. She was USA Field Hockey Athlete-of-the Year in 1981 and USOC Sportswoman-of-the-Year in 1980-81. Anders captained the US Olympic teams in 1980 and 1984.

As her playing career wound down, Anders turned to coaching, serving as head coach of Old Dominion University since 1980. She led Old Dominion to nine NCAA Division I Championships, winning in 1982-84, 1988, 1990-91, 1998, and 2000. Anders was CAA Field Hockey Coach of the Year in 1991-92, 1997-2000, 2002, and 2005. She has also coached the US national team in 1985, 1990-93, and 2003, helping them win a bronze medal at the 1991 Pan American Games. Anders is a member of the Ursinus College Hall of Fame for Athletics, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, and the USA Field Hockey Hall of Fame.
