Biography

Bill Alley was a javelin thrower at the University of Kansas and Syracuse University. He was NCAA Champion in 1959-60 (for Kansas), and was twice runner-up at the AAU Meet (1961-62). At the 1959 Texas Relays in Austin, Alley threw 82.33 m to break the American record for the javelin. In 1960 he was runner-up at the US Olympic Trials to make the Olympic team, although shortly before the Olympics, at the Meet of Champions in Houston, he threw his all-time PR of 83.46. In July 1960, at a meet in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Alley had a recorded throw of 86.46, which bettered the existing world record, but it was never ratified, because the field was not level.
