WNBA Season Starts Today! Check Out Basketball-Reference for Stats & New Features

24th May 2019

After a long offseason, the WNBA is returning for its 23rd season! The league's already been heating up with a dramatic trade that sent Liz Cambage, last year's leader in points per game, to the Las Vegas Aces, where she'll team up with Rookie of the Year A'ja Wilson. Will it be enough to overcome the reigning champion Seattle Storm, who will be without league MVP Breanna Stewart, and the Washington Mystics, who will attempt to avenge their 3-0 sweep last season in their third season with Elena Della Donne? 2019 NBA Draft Preview at Basketball-Reference

15th May 2019

Now that the lottery balls have been sorted out, the 2019 NBA Draft order is set. With that, Basketball-Reference has activated a 2019 NBA Draft Preview page to give you a quick lay of the land as we approach the draft date, June 20.

Of course, we've got the draft order there, from the New Orleans Pelicans holding the 1st overall pick down to the 60th pick held by the Sacramento Kings. We also have the calculated expected value in Win Shares for each draft pick, as well as the percentage of players selected with a pick that go on to play at least 1 NBA game. The table shows the top players selected at each pick to give you a quick look at best-case scenarios. For example, having the final pick of the 1st round may not seem that exciting but when you see David Lee and Jimmy Butler were 30th overall picks, that could help your mindset a little.

Our 2019 NBA Draft Preview also includes a list of the top 50 prospects as ranked by CBSSports.com, along with a statistical overview of their 2018-19 college season where applicable. For prospects who played in Europe, such as Sekou Doumbouya, clicking on their name will take you to available European statistics.

Basketball-Reference Individual Career Playoff Game Logs

7th May 2019

Basketball-Reference has individual game logs for all of NBA playoff history. Previously, if you wanted to see a player's performance in the postseason, you would need to choose a specific season's game logs to see their game logs in that particular playoff run. But now, we have added a Career Playoffs section that will list all playoff game logs in the player's career on a single page. The Career Playoffs section, in addition to having the same game log information you'd find in the yearly pages, also includes the playoff round and game number of the series for each line.

Here are links to some examples of Career Playoffs game log pages:

Basketball-Reference Adds League Leaderboard Appearances to Team Pages

7th May 2019

Basketball-Reference has added a section to team pages that displays what players on the team finished in the top 20 of league leaderboards in various statistical categories. This section is found near the bottom of team pages, and is useful if you want a quick view of which players on the team were best in the league in a certain field. For example, the 2018-19 Golden State Warriors section will show you Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry's appearances on many leaderboards, with cameos from Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Kevon Looney. A more stark example of a single-player dominated team would be the 2002-03 Minnesota Timberwolves, where Kevin Garnett was the lone Timberwolves player to appear in the top 10's of most of the league leaderboards, aside from stray appearances by Rasho Nesterovic and Troy Hudson.

Keep an eye on our Sports Reference Blog for more announcements of added features to Basketball-Reference! If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to contact us through our feedback form.

Basketball-Reference Adds Round/Game Info to Playoff Game Play Index Searches

1st May 2019

Basketball-Reference's Play Index set of tools includes a Player Game Finder that can do both regular season and playoff searches for single and combined game lines that meet certain criteria. For single-game playoff searches, we have now added round and series game number to the information displayed for each entry.

As an example of a search that now includes this information, let's say you want to browse all 50-point games in playoff history. Now you can more quickly spot that Michael Jordan's record 63-point game came in Game 2 of a first round series, while Elgin Baylor's 61-point game happened in Game 5 of the 1962 NBA Finals. Also, it's more apparent that no one's ever scored 50 points in a Game 7, although Kevin Durant this playoffs became the 4th player to have a Game 6 50-point game.

Basketball-Reference Adds Visual Standings By Date

16th April 2019

Basketball-Reference has added a new section to its season pages that present a more visual display of how conference and division standings changed from day to day within a season. Using the 2018-19 Eastern Conference standings by date as an example, you can see how the ordering of teams shifted from day to day, such as the struggle between Toronto and Milwaukee for the top spot in the conference in January, or how Brooklyn, Orlando and Detroit landed in the 6-8 spots in the final weeks of the seasons.

There is a table to indicate how many days a team spent in first place in the conference or division being displayed. There is also a function to highlight a specific team to better keep track of them on the table. For example, try going to the 2004-05 Western Conference standings, go to the Highlight a Team dropdown above the table and select the Denver Nuggets. That will highlight them on the table and you can track their meandering route to the 7th spot in the Western Conference that season.

“Own Goals” Added to NBA/ABA Box Scores

12th March 2019

At Basketball Reference, we're constantly working to beef up the accuracy and content of our historical box scores. A coverage map of our progress can be seen here.

We recently undertook a mission to ensure that the sum of player points within our box scores correctly adds up to their team's points in that game. We uncovered an interesting wrinkle in the way the NBA (and the ABA) attributed points to players and teams decades ago.

1984-85 NBA Box Scores Now 100% Complete

5th March 2019

At Basketball-Reference, we have a box score for every game in NBA history. However, the depth of those box scores is variable. In the 1940s and 1950s, they're generally barebones (points and FG/FT made) and for the last 35 seasons or so they're complete. A little over three years we announced that we had added ~99% coverage for NBA box scores for the 1984-85 & 1983-84 seasons. At the time, we were missing some ancillary statistics in 28 games over those two seasons. We're happy to announce that we've whittled that down to seven five games and each of those seven five is in 1983-84, meaning 1984-85 is now 100% covered.

Yearly League Totals and Per 100 Possessions Data Added to Basketball-Reference

5th March 2019

In Basketball-Reference's League Index, we include a link to NBA league averages broken down by season, so you can take a look at the evolution of the sport from the leaguewide perspective. Previously we only included the per-game averages, but we have now added options to view the yearly breakdowns in the form of totals and in per 100 team possessions format.

Maybe taking a look at the league totals over the course of the years makes some things more apparent, such as looking at 2004-05's 38,748 3-point attempts, as opposed to 2017-18's 71,340 3-point attempts. Going by totals also makes the shortened 1998-99 and 2011-12 seasons a little more apparent in the historical register.
