NBA Coach of the Year Voting Coverage Extended

Posted by Mike Lynch on March 6, 2023

Late last year Basketball Reference added NBA Coach of the Year voting back to 1995-96. Thanks to the research of Josh Elias and Robert Bradley, we have now added voting for the award all the way back to the 1962-63 season, which was the first year of the award.

Voting for the award appears in our yearly award voting summaries and also on coach pages. For instance, now Red Auerbach's page shows his Coach of the Year voting results (though the award only existed for the final four seasons of his legendary coaching career).

Voting for the award is complete for all seasons with the exception of the 1981-82 season, for which we have accounted for 56.5 of the 69 total votes. If you happen to have information on the other votes, please let us know.

For fun, here's a look at the leaders in NBA Coach of the Year voting award shares since 1962-63:

Interestingly, Tom Thibodeau, whose Knicks are on fire at the moment, has a realistic shot at breaking Gregg Popovich's 'record' at some point soon.
