The (In)complete Brady-Manning

Posted by Jonah Gardner on January 22, 2016

On the eve of Brady-Manning XVII, perhaps the last matchup ever in this historic rivalry, we wanted to take a moment to collect some of the notable facts and stats from one of the defining matchups of the last 15 years of football.

The stats:

Getting their aggregate matchup stats in a Play Index query is tricky, since both players missed time due to injury and Manning changed teams. So you have to break the queries up:

Every Manning Pass vs Brady: Part I | Every Manning Pass vs Brady: Part II

Every Brady Pass vs Manning: Part I | Every Brady Pass vs Manning: Part II

As for their aggregate head to head stats, I've taken the liberty of adding them up:

Peyton Manning: 410-657, 62.4% Cmp, 4,817 yards, 33 TD, 22 INT, 7.33 Y/A, 87.4 rating

Tom Brady: 368-555, 66.3% Cmp, 4,026 yards, 31 TD, 13 INT, 7.25 Y/A, 96.4 rating

By the way, Manning's yardage there would be 17th all-time for a QB in a single-season. Tom Brady's completion percentage would have been tied with Matt Ryan for 6th in 2015, while his QB rating would be 10th. Manning's passer rating? It's just below what Ryan Fitzpatrick did this year and he hasn't thrown 22 or more INTs in a season since 2001.

The aggregate score:

As you can see, Brady jumped out to an early lead and never relinquished it.

The playcalling:

This next chart is a breakdown of each game based on the number of runs and passes they called. Notice that the playcalling gets less balanced, in both directions, over time:

The supporting cast:

Of course, there's also the guys who Brady and Manning were throwing to. In total, 94 players were targeted by either Brady or Manning (or both) in one of their 16 games. 87 caught a pass and 32 caught TDs. Here are some of the leaders:
