The 2006 Olympic short track competitions took place in the Palavela. It was originally constructed for Italia '61, an exposition to celebrate 100 years of Italian unity. Named Palazzo delle Mostre, it was commonly known as Palazzo a Vela (Palavela, for short) due to its sail-shaped roof. As in previous Olympics, the venue was shared with the Olympic figure skaters.
The short track events remained unchanged, at four each for men and women. Unlike in previous games, two skaters dominated the events, both from South Korea. An Hyeon-Su won three gold medals and a bronze in the men's competition, while female counterpart Jin Seon-Yu also took three golds home to Korea.
