Alpine Skiing at the 2002 Winter Games: Previous Winter Games ▪ Next Winter Games
Host City: Salt Lake City, United States
Venue(s): Snowbasin Ski Resort, Huntsville, Utah
Date Started: February 12, 2002
Date Finished: February 12, 2002
| Gold: | Carole Montillet-Carles |
| Silver: | Isolde Kostner |
| Bronze: | Renate Götschl |
The women’s downhill was postponed by one day because of strong winds. Italy’s Isolde Kostner was the favorite, as she had won the 2001 World Cup and was leading the 2001-02 event. Second and third in the World Cup coming into Salt Lake were Renate Götschl (AUT) and German Hilde Gerg. They were the three last skiers to go off among the seeds. Just before them, France’s Carole Montillet moved into the lead with 1:39.56, and none of the favorites could better that time, giving Montillet a shocking gold medal. She had never previously won a World Cup downhill, and she was still in mourning over the death of Régine Cavagnoud, her close friend and teammate, who died in October 2001 in a training accident. Behind her, Kostner, Götschl, and Gerg finished in that order, the same as their World Cup standings.
