Host City: Sankt Moritz, Switzerland
Venue(s): Corviglia, St. Moritz; Suvretta, St. Moritz
Date Started: February 2, 1948
Date Finished: February 4, 1948
Format: One downhill run and two slalom runs, point tables determined placement.
| Gold: | Henri Oreiller |
| Silver: | Karl Molitor |
| Bronze: | James Couttet |
The combined competition used the times for the open downhill, followed by a combined slalom competition, separate from the open slalom, with times converted to points. The downhill took place on 2 February, and the combined slalom was held on 4 February. Henri Oreiller had won the downhill by over 4 seconds and had a big lead going into the combined slalom. He held on by placing fifth in the slalom to win his second gold medal at the St. Moritz Olympics. Karl Molitor had been second in the downhill and placed sixth in the slalom to win another silver medal. The leader in the slalom was France’s James Couttet, who won a bronze in the combined. Couttet was now a slalom specialist and had placed second in the open slalom event. But he was one of the few skiers who had competed internationally before the war, winning the downhill gold medal at the 1938 World Championships. Couttet also competed in ski jumping at the Sankt Moritz Winter Olympics, placing 25th on the normal hill.
