Summary

The Russian duo Nataliya Ishchenko and Svetlana Romashina were the heavy favorites, having won the World Championships in 2009 and 2011, with Ishchenko winning six gold medals at 2011 Worlds and five in 2009. They won London gold with a dominant performance, as in the final they were a full two-points ahead of Spain’s Andrea Fuentes and Ona Carbonell. Fuentes and Carbonell were audience favorites for their fast routine which featured mirrored movements and connected elements. The bronze went to China’s Huang Xuechen and Liu Ou, who had been fourth in Beijing.

This was the fourth consecutive victory in this event for a Russian pair. Ishchenko and Romashina would also win gold on the Russian team that won the team event. Japan failed to medal in this event for the first time ever, as Yukiko Inui and Chisa Kobayashi placed fifth.
