[Ramaz Nozadze] of Georgia had won the silver medal at Athina in 2004, was the 2007 World Champion, and was a slight favorite, but he lost in the quarter-finals to Czech [Marek Švec]. The defending gold medalist, Egyptian [Karam Gaber], also lost early, going out to Albanian [Elis Guri]. This left the tournament wide open and the final turned out to be a re-match of the 2008 European Championship, with Russian [Aslanbek Khushtov] faving German [Mirko Englich]. The result was the same, with Khushtov winning Olympic gold in Beijing.
