Summary

As always, the favorite was Germany’s Ralf Schumann, gold medalist in 1992, 1996, and 2004, and twice World Champion. The format was slightly different as the finals were increased to 20 shots, with only six shooters advancing to the final. The qualifying was led by American Keith Sanderson with 583, with Schumann four points back in fifth place. Sanderson struggled in the final, shooting the lowest score of the finalists and placing only fifth overall. Schumann had the highest score in the final round, with 200.5, but this moved him up only to the silver medal. The gold went to Ukrainian Oleksandr Petriv, who had been fourth after qualifying. For Schumann it was his fifth Olympic medal in rapid-fire pistol, with silvers in 1988 and 2008 added to his three golds.
