Roberto Cammarelle (ITA) had won the 2007 World Championships, after a bronze medal in 2005, a 2004 Olympic bronze medal, and silvers at the 2002 and 2004 European Championships. One boxer not in Beijing was Cuba's Odlanier Solís, 2004 Olympic gold medalist in the heavyweight division who had defected from Cuba in 2006 and turned professional. Cammarelle won his early round bouts easily to face China's Zhang Zhilei in the final. Zhang had been a bronze medalist at the 2007 Worlds and silver medalist at the 2007 Asian Championships.
Well ahead after three rounds of the final, Cammarelle staggered Zhang early in the fourth round, causing the referee to stop the bout, giving Cammarelle the gold medal. He would come back in 2009 and again win the World Championships, but lost in the quarter-finals at the 2011 Worlds. Odlanier Solís prospered as a pro, winning his first 17 fights before losing a WBC heavyweight title fight to Vitaly Klichko.
