Summary

The favorite was Kenya's Janeth Jepkosgei who had won the 2007 World Championships. In the final she led for the first 200 metres before being passed by her teammate, 18-year-old Pamela Jelimo, who nobody had heard of prior to 2008, but who had won all her Golden League races earlier in 2008. Jelimo was never headed, winning the race quite easily, setting a World Junior Record in the process. Jepkosgei got the silver medal, followed by Morocco's Hasna Benhassi, the silver medalist in Athina. Mozambique's Maria Mutola was running in her fifth Olympic 800 final, having won gold in 2000, and briefly challenged at 600 metres but eventually finished fifth.
