Summary

The favorite was Kenya's [Janeth Jepkosgei] who had won the 2007 World Championships. In the final she led for the first 200 metres before being passed by her teammate, 18-year-old [Pamela Jelimo], who nobody had heard of prior to 2008, but who had won all her Golden League races earlier in 2008. Jelimo was never headed, winning the race quite easily, setting a World Junior Record in the process. Jepkosgei got the silver medal, followed by Morocco's [Hasna Benhassi], the silver medalist in Athina. Mozambique's [Maria Mutola] was running in her fifth Olympic 800 final, having won gold in 2000, and briefly challenged at 600 metres but eventually finished fifth.
