The slight favorite was Russia’s Varteres Samurgashev, who won Olympic gold in 2000 as a lightweight, and was 2002 World Champion in this class. Prior to 2004 Uzbeki Aleksandr Dokturishvili had won the 2001 European title, and earlier in the year he had won the Asian Championships. The two met in the semi-finals with Dokturishvili upsetting the Russian, 5-2. He then met Finn Marko Yli-Hannuksela, the 2000 Olympic bronze medalist, in the final. Dokturishvili won the gold medal by a 4-1 decision. Dokturishivili had competed for Georgia until 2001, when he was kicked off the national team, so he relocated to Uzbekistan in 2003.
