The slight favorite was Russia’s [Varteres Samurgashev], who won Olympic gold in 2000 as a lightweight, and was 2002 World Champion in this class. Prior to 2004 Uzbeki [Aleksandr Dokturishvili] had won the 2001 European title, and earlier in the year he had won the Asian Championships. The two met in the semi-finals with Dokturishvili upsetting the Russian, 5-2. He then met Finn [Marko Yli-Hannuksela], the 2000 Olympic bronze medalist, in the final. Dokturishvili won the gold medal by a 4-1 decision. Dokturishivili had competed for Georgia until 2001, when he was kicked off the national team, so he relocated to Uzbekistan in 2003.
