The Russians swept the medals in this event, the first medal sweep in women's athletics since the 1980 Olympics, and the first time this had been done in this event at the Olympics or World Championships. Tatyana Lebedeva was the surprise gold medalist. She had been favored in the triple jump, in which she was the two-time defending World Champion, but she had placed only third in that event at Athina. But in the long jump, she took the lead in round two with 7.07 (23-2½) and that was good enough for the gold medal. Tatyana Kotova placed third, having been the runner-up at the last three World Championships, and European Champion in 2002.
