Date Started: August 22, 2004
Date Finished: August 24, 2004

Gold: USA Joanna Hayes
Silver: UKR Olena Ovcharova-Krasovska
Bronze: USA Melissa Morrison

For the fourth straight Olympics, Gail Devers continued her personal high hurdles soap opera. This time she started the first round with a wrap around an injured calf, and she did not make it over the first hurdle, her Olympic hurdling career over. The favorite’s role in Athina fell to Canada’s Perdita Felicien, who had been World Champion in 2003, and she posted the fastest time in the semi-finals. In the final, Felicien hit the first hurdle hard, and moved into the adjacent lane, taking out Russia’s Irina Shevchenko, both falling. There was now nobody left in the race with any significant high hurdle record. America’s Joanna Hayes, a converted 400 hurdler, went on to win in 12.37. Russian officials protested the race, demanding that it be re-run but this was not done.
