Summary

The heavy favorite was Russian Aleksandr Moskalenko. He had won the World Championship in 1990, 1992, and 1994 and then retired. But when trampoline was added to the Olympic program he came out of retirement. Grossly out of shape, he had to lose 24 kg. to compete again, but won the World Championship in 1999. He won an easy gold medal, leading the qualifying and the final. The silver medalist, Ji Wallace of Australia, had won the 1996 World Championships in the double mini trampoline. In 2005, Wallace became one of the first prominent Australian athletes to come out as gay. The bronze medalist, Mathieu Turgeon, was a big surprise as he had only qualified for the Olympics by being given a wild card into the competition.
