Jung Jae-Eun (KOR) had won the 1997 and 1999 world titles. She was the heavy favorite and did not disappoint. She won her opening match 8-1, and survived a tight match, 2-1, in the semi-finals against Turkey’s Hamide Bikçin. In the final, Jung faced the Vietnamese fighter, Trần Hiếu Ngân, and won 2-0. Trần’s silver medal was the first ever won in the Olympics by any Vietnamese athlete. Bikçin won the bronze medal.
