The Williams’ sisters, Serena and Venus, had both been ranked #1 in the world in singles. At major championships they originally did not also play doubles, because of the stress of playing both events, usually to the final. But in 1999, they won the French and US Opens and in 2000, won the Wimbledon doubles crown. In Sydney, they easily won the gold medal, dominating the final, 6-1, 6-1, over the Dutch team of Kristie Boogert and Miriam Oremans. Venus also won the singles gold medal in Sydney, making her the first Olympic tennis player to win two gold medals at a single Olympics since Helen Wills in 1924.
