Since the 1973 World Championships, the podium at every Olympics and World Championships had consisted of synchro swimmers from the United States, Canada, and Japan. But this was to change in 2000, and a new order in synchronized swimming would occur, as Russian swimmers would establish their dominance, winning both events, which they would repeat in 2004 and 2008. Once again, there was no solo Olympic event, but duet, which had been removed from the 1996 Olympic program, was back, along with the team event.
