After the disappointment of defeat in the freestyle relays, the US team badly wanted to avoid being shut out of gold in the medley relay. Their team appeared much stronger than their opposition as it included three individual medalists and a fourth place finisher – something their rivals could not call upon.
In the final Lenny Krayzelburg’s backstroke put Team USA into a healthy lead that Ed Moses extended to two seconds over the second leg. Australia rallied on the penultimate leg but Gary Hall, Jr. earned redemption for his 4 x 100 metres freestyle swim by extending the gap on the final leg. This kept the US streak of having won the event every time they had contested it. Australia had the consolation of silver with Germany back in third.
