The event was changed slightly. In 1996 teams consisted of seven gymnasts, with six competing on each apparatus, and only the top five scores counting for each routine. In 2000, the format reverted to six gymnasts per team, with five allowed to compete with the top four scores counting on each apparatus. In addition, there was now a qualifying round which advanced six teams to the finals. The qualifying score were then discarded and only the final round scores counted towards the final placements.
China had been the silver medalist at the 1984, 1992, and 1996 Olympics, but had won the 1997 and 1999 World Championships and finally came through with Olympic gold in Sydney. They were trailed by two former Soviet republics, the Ukraine and Russia. Japan had once been the absolute power in this event, winning the gold medal from 1960-76, but had plummeted to 10th in 1996. They improved in 2000, placing fourth, and would continue to improve, returning to gold medal status in 2004.
