The Olympic canoeing program was standardized in 1992, with the same events contested for men and women from 1992-2008. There were nine men’s flatwater events (five kayak, four Canadian canoe), three women’s flatwater kayak events, three men’s whitewater events (one kayak, two Canadian canoe), and a women’s whitewater kayak singles.\n\nThe venues for flatwater and whitewater were separate, as they have to be, but they were adjacent and were set at the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith, New South Wales, which also hosted the rowing events. Penrith is a western suburb of Sydney, approximately 50 km from the city center.
