Summary

Britain's Paula Radcliffe had finished second at the 1999 World Championships, trailing Gete Wami of Ethiopia. In that race Radcliffe had set a fast pace, trying to run the kick out of her rivals but was still outkicked. Her strategy for Sydney was more of same – she set an even faster pace, leading thru most of the first 20 laps. This strung out the field and only five runners remained in medal contention at that point. The pack was Radcliffe, Wami, 1996 champion Fernanda Ribeiro, 1992 champion Derartu Tulu, and Kenya's Tegla Loroupe, bronze medalist at the 1999 Worlds. For the last five laps, the lead changed hands frequently. At the bell, Tulu took off and won by five seconds. Radcliffe had been run out and could not get a medal, with Wami outsprinting Ribeiro for the silver.
