Host City: Atlanta, United States
Venue(s): Georgia World Congress Center, Atlanta, Georgia
Date Started: July 21, 1996
Date Finished: July 22, 1996
Format: Single-elimination tournament with classification rounds for placements.
The defending champion was Mnatsakan Iskandaryan, who had won the 1994 World title, but he had otherwise not been that impressive in the ensuing two years. In the semi-finals he met Cuban Filiberto Azcuy, bronze medalist at the 1995 Worlds, and the 1995 Pan American Games Champion. Azcuy eked out a 5-4 victory to advance to the final against Finland’s Marko Asell, who was completely unheralded. Azcuy had little trouble with the Finn, winning 8-2 to take the gold medal. Azcuy would return and win another gold medal in 2000 at Sydney, although the weight classes were slightly different.
