The synchronized swimming program was different in 1996. The solo and duet events were eliminated and replaced by a team competition consisting of eight swimmers, supposedly because the team event was more appealing to the audience and television. Synchronized team competition had been held at the World Aquatics Championships since that meet was first held in 1973.
