In 1996, the gymnastics officials added a second event to the rhythmic gymnastics program at the Olympics. A group competition with six gymnasts competing in each performance was added. Group championships had been held at the World Championships since 1967. At the 1952 and 1956 Olympics a rhythmic gymnastics group event was also contested, then termed team, portable apparatus competition.
