Summary

Jo Min-Seon had competed in the women’s judo demonstration event at the 1988 Olympics, placing third. She had since won the 1993 and 1995 World Championships and was heavily favored in Atlanta. Jo was never challenged, winning all five matches by ippon, with the final against the surprising Aneta Szczepańska of Poland, who had no international record of any sort. Jo would eventually win Korean national titles in five different weight categories (48 to 66 kg).
