There were no format changes in handball in Atlanta. As in Barcelona, twelve men's teams and eight women's teams competed for Olympic glory. In both competitions, the title was won by a débutant. Croatia won the men's gold, although five of its players had already won Olympic bronze in 1988, while still playing for Yugoslavia. On the women's side, Denmark started a dominance of Olympic handball that would last through the 2004 Athens Games.
